If you intend to sell in the near future, do not underestimate the time required to declutter your home. A family home is normally bursting with ‘stuff’ acquired over time, from every member of the family.
When preparing your home for sale, decluttering is essential to enable your property to present cleanly and to allow you to move into your new home with the belongings that, ‘spark joy’, as encouraged by tidying expert, Marie Kondo.
For some, it can be challenging to part with old clothes, furniture or books – even if seemingly long forgotten or hidden at the back of a cupboard. However, from our perspective, decluttering helps sellers emotionally prepare for the sale of a much-loved family home and is absolutely essential, if they wish to present their home in its best possible light.
Investigate when your next council clean up is scheduled and let that guide your decluttering plan. Then ask yourself if the item you no longer need is rubbish, saleable or to be gifted? Your answer will direct how to proceed.
- Rubbish = Council Clean Up or a trip to the tip
- Sell = Gum Tree or eBay
- Gift = Salvation Army / St Vincent de Paul / friends
Although decluttering is very time-consuming, it will be well worth the effort!
